Character Information:
Name: Kathleen Parrish
Rank: None
Occupation: Former prostitute back east, in search of a new life.
Nick Names/Aliases: Katie amongst close friends and family, Angel to her former clientele
Age: 24, birthday 4/27/ 1856
Appearance: Katie’s slender, 5’6, with long wavy chestnut locks, usually worn in a loose knot that cascades down her back, with pale skin and piercing blue eyes.
Belongings/Equipment: Katie arrived with one carpet bag that holds a fairly large amount of gold to start her new life with, a locket with her parents pictures in it from the old country, and little else.
Any distinguishing features: Katie tends to wear wide brimmed bonnets and loose, modest clothing that hides most of her features when in public. She would explain this unusual dress as a necessity to protect her pale irish skin.
Place of Birth: Katie was born in Ireland, ran away from home and found a way to gain passage to America when she was 12.
Family: Katie left her father and 4 brothers behind, and has never successfully managed to contact them since she left them. She worries about them often.
Brief Personal History: Kathleen Parrish was born to Molly and John Parrish in 1856, low class farmers. When her mother died at the age of ten, her father got involved with a political movement and it fell to her older brother to keep the family together. As the only girl in the house, Katie spent most of her time cooking for her brothers and father and keeping the house together, and she despised the menial labor, dreaming of a more glamorous life she heard about from letters her friends who had left Ireland sent to her.
When she was twelve, Marcus Lanchester, an American gentleman came to town speaking of grand opportunities in the United States and took a shining to her, which was greatly flattering. She started a friendship with the man which quickly evolved until rumors of the pair of them got to her brothers, who angrily shut her in the house and threatened Lancheter's safety.
Feeling imprisoned, she packed her belongings and made her way to Lanchester, begging to accompany him as he left. Reluctantly, he agreed, telling her that his business associate would arrange passage and she would rejoin him when he came to New York.
Soon, she learned that her passage did not come freely, and grew up entirely too quickly. At thirteen she was established with a madame in the unpleasant part of New York City, where her uncommon looks and memorable blue eyes gained her a reputation. Ever the survivor, she left girlhood behind and throughout the years she grew in her business, entertaining, escorting, and otherwise servicing some of the wealthiest politicians and business owners in the eastern cities.
All through this successful career, she always kept sharp eyes out for opportunities to break free. She was always under escort of body guards, ostensibly there for her protection, and while she made a percentage of the establishment's wage the older she got and the more demanding she became, it was not enough to pay for her freedom and get her far enough away from danger.
Then one day, she discovered a large purse unattended while looking for a dress that had gone missing, and promptly took action without second thought, paying off her guards and taking a train out until the tracks were no longer. Then she exchanged her fancy clothing for plainer cloth, and took a carriage, looking for the most remote area she could possibly find, somewhere she could disappear for she was sure they would look for her.
Then at one of the stops the carriage made, she looked out and discovered a place remote but growing enough that she was sure she could find a place there, in this little town of Lost Haven.
The very name of the place just seemed to fit. Here she'd stay, and start over, a wiser, older girl, more experienced than she'd like to be, determined to never open that chapter of her past again.
Personality/Quirks: Katie's sharp, witty, and has a good sense of humor, but is very good at being impossible to read, and has a habit of disappearing if she feels threatened. While she is good at not sharing any history with anyone, she still carries an air that draws attention and curiosity wherever she goes.
Audition Piece: Katie brushed a curl out of her face, blinking her eyes against the dry, dusty breeze that had started to blow through the carriage's open windows. Not that she wasn't completely happy with that - it had been a stifling, bumpy, smelly, horrible journey for the last six hours.
Fanning herself more slowly, she dared to glance up again at her traveling companion, a snoring man, his hat over his eyes, his feet crossed on the bench next to her, and grimaced with distaste. She was good at judging the character of men, and sizing them up without ever hearing them speak.
This one was very...country, unwashed, uneducated, but probably fairly decent. Married, or at least well cared for, but poor, judging by the carefully stitched patches in his clothing, and a hard worker. His muscles were large. She felt no attraction, doubted she ever had or would be attracted to anyone again.
Fortunately, that was a non-issue, she was free and she had been moving fast for three weeks and was fairly confident she'd shaken her enemies.
As the carriage finally slowed to a stop, the man stirred and they both eagerly stepped out to stretch their legs. Clutching her carpetbag closely, she narrowed her eyes, searching for a place to get some food. "Excuse me!" She called up to the short, squat man carefully dismounting from the carriage who looked up and blinked at her, clearly taken aback at being addressed by the young woman so forwardly. "Eh, miss?"
"Would you be so kind as te tell me where we've stopped?"
"Well, this'd be Lost Haven, I do b'lieve. We'll only be here twenty, ehhh thirty minutes or so, for we'll be stopping for the night in a few hours."
Kate nodded, then turned, walking slowly. She was tired, VERY tired of travelling, and this town was small, not even a dot on the map, but not barbaric, there were nicely cared for buildings and she spotted a few women here and there tending to their business, even some friendly, curious glances. It felt right.
Perhaps this was going to be home...
